NIOS-National Institute of Open Schooling Result: Declared at www.nios.ac.in.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has declared the Secondary Board exam results today. The results can be viewed at the official site of the board, www.nios.ac.in.

Almost 35,000 students from Uttarakhand and Western Uttar Pradesh appeared for the NIOS class 10 and class 12 exam. This year, 104 centres were identified to conduct the examinations.

The students who appeared for the exams could check their results in the following steps:

Go to the official website of NIOS
Click on the link ‘Secondary Examination Results Declared’
Enter your roll number
Click on ‘Submit’
The results will be available online and can be downloaded for reference, too.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was earlier known as National Open School (NOS) and was established in November 1989 as an autonomous organisation by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

In 1986, the National Policy on Education suggested strengthening of Open School System for extending open learning facilities in a phased manner at secondary level all over the country as an independent system with its own curriculum and examination leading to certification. Hence, the open school was established in 1989 for the promotion and development of secondary education in the country.

Its aim is to provide education for adult neo-literates, working men and women to reinforce their functional literacy and not to allow them to relapse into illiteracy.
National Institute of Open Schooling conducts the Secondary, i.e. Class 10 and Senior Secondary, i.e. Class 12 examinations, every year.

Supreme Court cancels All India Pre-Medical Test

Supreme Court cancels All India Pre-Medical Test

The Supreme Court has directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to re-conduct All India Pre-Medical Test 2015 within four weeks.

The Supreme Court on Friday had reserved its verdict on petitions seeking re-conduct of All India Pre-Medical Test 2015 for alleged large-scale irregularities in the examination held on May 3.

During the hearing, the Bench said, “The examination stands vitiated even if one student is being benefited illegally. We are not holding CBSE guilty as such. Taking into consideration the past such incidents, CBSE ought to have been cognisant of these things. It had been happening for last two-three years,” it said.

Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, appearing for CBSE, opposed the contentions seeking cancellation of the test, saying, “6.3 lakh students cannot be made to take the exam afresh when only 44 students have been found involved in taking benefits through unfair means.”

Earlier, the vacation Bench had asked Haryana Police to file a fresh report indicating the number of beneficiaries of the alleged irregularities in the pre-medical examination. It had also asked the police to identify as many candidates as possible who had been benefited from the alleged leak. CBSE was to declare the results of AIPMT on June 5.

“We are fully aware of all this. The bigger issue is that the sanctity of the examination is under suspicion. We want to be doubly sure that there is no alternative but to order re-conduct of the examination,” the court had said, adding that it did want to take a decision “in haste.”

“We have to be doubly sure. We do not want to be criticised for any action,” the Bench had said and asked the police to “hunt” for other beneficiaries. “We are expecting the probe to conclude,” the Bench had said, adding that this was “important” to decide the future course of action.

    • Some universities also consider merit-based admissions.
  3. Personal Interview/Group Discussion (If applicable):
    • After the entrance exam, shortlisted candidates may be required to attend a personal interview or group discussion.
  4. Final Selection:
    • Based on the entrance exam, interview performance, and sometimes academic records, candidates are selected for admission.

Advantages of Pursuing Integrated MA

  1. Cost-Efficient:
    • Since the course combines both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, it is often more cost-effective compared to pursuing separate BA and MA programs.
  2. Time-Saving:
    • The integrated program typically takes five years to complete, saving time when compared to completing a BA first and then an MA.
  3. Comprehensive Learning:
    • The curriculum is designed to offer in-depth knowledge and research opportunities, which enriches the student’s academic journey.
  4. Early Career Start:
    • By finishing the Master’s degree earlier, students can enter the workforce sooner, with better qualifications.

Scientists Reprogram Plants for Drought Tolerance

Sean Cutler’s lab introduced the engineered receptor into transgenic Arabidopsis to establish if it was sufficient to improve survival after drought, one measure of drought tolerance. The transgenic (right) but not non-transgenic plants (left) show improved survival after an extended drought. In this experiment water is withheld for 12 days, which cause severe wilting, and the plants are then re-watered to assess survival.

UC Riverside-led research in synthetic biology provides a strategy that has reprogrammed plants to consume less water after they are exposed to an agrochemical, opening new doors for crop improvement.

Crops and other plants are constantly faced with adverse environmental conditions, such as rising temperatures (2014 was the warmest year on record) and lessening fresh water supplies, which lower yield and cost farmers billions of dollars annually.

Drought is a major environmental stress factor affecting plant growth and development. When plants encounter drought, they naturally produce abscisic acid (ABA), a stress hormone that inhibits plant growth and reduces water consumption. Specifically, the hormone turns on a receptor (special protein) in plants when it binds to the receptor like a hand fitting into a glove, resulting in beneficial changes — such as the closing of guard cells on leaves, called stomata, to reduce water loss — that help the plants survive.

Blue-eyed humans have a single, common ancestor

Variation in the colour of the eyes from brown to green can all be explained by the amount of melanin in the iris, but blue-eyed individuals only have a small degree of variation in the amount of melanin in their eyes.

New research shows that people with blue eyes have a single, common ancestor. A team at the University of Copenhagen have tracked down a genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today.

Sweet potato naturally ‘genetically modified’

scientia166

The sweet potato is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Its large, starchy, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots are a root vegetable. The young leaves and shoots are sometimes eaten as greens.

Sweet potatoes from all over the world naturally contain genes from the bacterium Agrobacterium. Researchers from UGent and the International Potato Institute (CIP) publish this discovery on the website of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America). Later it will be on the cover of this magazine. Sweet potato is one of the most important food crops for human consumption in the world. Because of the presence of this “foreign” DNA, sweet potato can be seen as a “natural GMO.”

sweat might make you smell sweeter

Scientists have developed a fragrance-delivery system that works overtime when you perspire

Scientists have created a scent-delivery system that releases a pleasant fragrance when you sweat. Apply it to the skin, and the more you sweat the better you’ll smell. That’s because the perfume only gets released upon contact with moisture.

Chemists at Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland combined two compounds to create their new system. One chemical is alcohol-based. This is the nice-smelling perfume. The other chemical is an ionic liquid. It’s a type of salt that is liquid at room temperature.

Ionic liquids are made of ions — molecules that have lost or gained one or more electrons. If the molecule loses electrons, it will have a positive charge. If it gains electrons, it gets a negative charge. Ionic liquids contain the same number of positive and negative ions. This makes the liquid neutral, with no overall electric charge. In general, ionic liquids also have no smell.

When the perfume and ionic liquid are mixed together, a chemical reaction occurs. This bonds the molecules to each together. The reaction also temporarily inactivates the perfume’s molecules. So when applied to the skin, the new perfume initially has no scent.

But adding water — or sweat — breaks the bond between the molecules. That releases the scent into the air. The researchers experimented with two different fragrances. One smelled musky. The other had a sweet, fruity smell.
