Scientists ‘see’ thunder for first time

Map of sound waves sheds light on the energy behind lightning

For the first time, scientists have precisely mapped the loud clap radiating from a lightning strike. This picture of thunder’s origins could reveal the energies involved in powering some of nature’s flashiest light shows.

Lightning strikes when an electric current flows from a negatively charged cloud to the ground. This rapidly heats and expands the surrounding air, creating sonic shock waves. We hear this as thunder.

Scientists have a basic understanding of the origins of thunder. Still, experts have lacked a detailed picture of the physics powering the loud cracks and low rumbles.

Maher Dayeh works at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. As a heliophysicist, he studies the sun and its effects on the solar system, including Earth. He and his colleagues also study lightning — by making their own. These experts trigger the bolts by firing a small rocket into an electrically charged cloud. Trailing behind the rocket is a long, Kevlar-coated copper wire. The lightning travels along that wire to the ground.

As the government gears up to celebrate the maiden International Yoga Day, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said the United Nation’s decision in this regard will help popularise yoga globally and enable people to benefit from this “priceless Indian heritage”.

At an event where he was presented the first copy of ‘Yogikasparsh (yogi’s touch)’, a yoga manual in Braille to help the visually-impaired, Mukherjee noted that the ancient Indian practice offers “a complete answer to people’s need for physical, mental, moral and spiritual well-being”.

Speaking about the UN’s declaration of June 21 as International Yoga Day, he said, “I am confident this will help popularise yoga globally and enable people to benefit from this priceless Indian heritage.”

He said yoga was arguably the most valuable Indian cultural heritage and it was an art, science and philosophy which helps people in self-realisation.

“Yoga is an art, science and philosophy. It helps to join the powers of body, mind and soul for achieving self-realisation. Modern medical science has validated that the practice of yoga not only reduces stress but has multiple long-lasting beneficial effects. Yogic discipline not only helps control the wavering mind but also inspires the pursuit of excellence,” he said.

‘Yogikasparsh’ has been written by Nivedita Joshi, daughter of senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

She said she was bed-ridden by a host of crippling ailments for years before she regained health and vigour with practice of yoga under the guidance of noted guru BKS Iyengar.

She was long driven by a quest to take yoga to the blind, 39 million globally and one-third of them living in India, Joshi said.

“This effort will bring so much more light to those who thought they could not move in that direction (of yoga),” she said.

“As we prepare to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, it gives me immense satisfaction that the Yoga manual in Braille is being offered as a unique gift to the visually impaired,” the President said.

Naturally occurring changes in a previously unstudied gene can prevent people from experiencing pain. And that’s not good. It can leave them dangerously unaware of harm.

Researchers presented the finding May 25 in Nature Genetics.

The gene’s name is PRDM12. Pain is the body’s way of signaling that something is wrong. Certainmutations — naturally occurring changes — in that gene keep people from feeling pain. Robbed of this warning, affected people may fail to protect themselves from unintentional injuries. Such injuries could range from skin burns or scratched eyes to missing digits.

However, there is some good news in the finding. Better understanding of how a mutated PRDM12 gene blocks pain might one day lead to better treatments for people who suffer from too much pain.

“It’s promising, but there’s a long way to go,” says Simon Halegoua. He’s a neuroscientist at Stony Brook University in New York who did not work on the new study.

A student typically chooses which tests to take depending upon college entrance requirements for the college in which he or she is planning to apply. Every test is now a one-hour timed test.
