Smriti Irani inaugurates IIM Udaipur

0

IIM-Udaipur
Union Minister Smriti Irani today said a special ‘centre for tourism hospitality’ will be constructed in the IIM campus here, in which students from across the country, interested in learning hospitality management can enroll themselves.
Keeping in view the hospitable nature of Rajasthan, this centre will be brought up in the Indian Institute of Management campus here, the Union HRD Minister said.
She was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the first IIM campus, situated in Balicha in the city.

Through IIM, Rajasthan can become one of the leading states in education, she said.

Mentioning the ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ — an initiative of the HRD Ministry involving engagement of institutions such as IITs and IIMs with communities around them — Irani said, IIM Udaipur has also been directed to adopt villages near it for their upliftment.

The ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ involves engaging with communities around each institute and for their upliftment. Under the programme, each IIT will identify 10 villages in its neighbourhood and work out technologies to solve the most pressing issues of the region.

“A country’s soul lies in its villages. We are thinking upon including issues related to agro based industries in the syllabus,” she said.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje said, “Centres like IIM should should be set-up in different corners of Rajasthan for a bright future of the state’s youth”.

The Chief Minister said due to coming up of an IIM here, Rajasthan will now be included in the list of developed states.

Inspired by Arvind Kejriwal, IITians mull career in politics

0

iit-in-kejriwal
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s astounding comeback in the Delhi Assembly polls is inspiring the students of IIT-Kharagpur, where the Delhi Chief Minister had studied, to take up politics as a career.

“Making a career in politics is one of the options before me now after graduating from IIT. Kejriwal has proved that even those from IIT and engineering background can be successful in politics,” Atal Ashutosh Agarwal, a third year student of mechanical engineering of IIT-Kharagpur, told PTI.

Originally from Delhi, politics caught his fancy after he saw the IIT alumni waging a war against corruption along with his one-time mentor, social activist Anna Hazare.

“Kejriwal has made it easier for us to enter politics. He has shown us the path and is an inspiration,” said Agarwal, who has already joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Lokesh Deshmukh, a second-year geophysics student who helped AAP carry out online and phone campaigning during Delhi polls, said the number of those from the campus of the top engineering institute joining as volunteers of the party was increasing.

“It is all because of Kejriwal as everyone on the campus has a soft corner for him. He is one of us,” he said.

On Facebook, hundreds of young IITians come together on the community page ‘AAP IIT Kharagpur’ to discuss political developments and issues related to the party. The page has already crossed over 2,000 ‘likes’.

Politics, otherwise, is taboo on the IIT campus as political activities are not permitted inside.

Kejriwal had studied mechanical engineering at Kharagpur from 1985. The Nehru Hall hostel where Kejriwal stayed for five years is known for its social and cultural activities.

“He was a regular at Hindi dramatics society meets and was active in events related to public speaking, debating, etc. That gave him a good exposure which is helping him now in the political world,” Agarwal said, adding that the IIT culture makes them go beyond the world of textbooks and classrooms.

Professor Shankar Kumar Shome, a former director of the institute who had taught Kejriwal, said they provide holistic education which pushes students to achieve the pinnacle of success.

“After they pass-out, they can take up whatever careers they want to,” he said.

Mamata Banerjee announces Sanskrit university in West Bengal

Sanskrit
Bengal is getting its first Sanskrit university, but little else other than the name has been decided.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the varsity would be named ‘Paschim Banga Sanskrito Viswa Vidyalaya’. A commission under Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri has been formed to decide the likely cost, location and other key details. The panel has to submit its report in two months.

The CM seemed quite enthusiastic about the project. In the evening, Mamata posted on her Facebook page: “I am happy to share with you that we will be setting up a new Sanskrit University for the first time in the state. This will give a huge fillip to studies and research on one of the most ancient languages known to mankind.”

The existing Sanskrit college in Kolkata will come under the ambit of the university, say sources. This will be the third Sanskrit university in eastern India after Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidayalaya in Puri (1981) and Kumar Bhaskar Varman Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University in Nalbari, Assam (2011).

The announcement came a day before Mamata is to leave for Bangladesh to attend the Bhasha Divas celebrations. The visit will help further strengthen ties between Bangladesh and West Bengal.

“We are very happy that we are going to Bangladesh to attend the Bhasha Divas celebrations. We will pay our homage to the martyrs. I have gone to Bangladesh previously. We are overwhelmed at their hospitality. We will meet the Prime Minister and President. There will be business meets, too. Our language, food and culture are the same and we hope that this trip will make our bond stronger,” the chief minister said.

Mamata’s delegation is a mix of ministers, MPs, bureaucrats, industrialists and cultural personalities. Filmmaker Gautam Ghosh, poet Subodh Sarkar, actors Prasenjit, Moon Moon Sen and Dev and singer Indranil Sen will join ministers Firhad Hakim and Bratya Basu.

However, former MP Kabir Suman is not in the team. Replying to a question from mediapersons, Mamata said she would have been happy if Suman had been part of the state delegation. “But he may have some health reasons for not going,” she said. A replica of the Bhasha Shahid Smarak will be set up near Birla Planetarium.

Over four lakh candidates will take this year’s Class X examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education (Seba). The High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa (AHM) exams will begin from Thursday.

The state government has asked all district magistrates to maintain strict vigil across the 940 examination centers.

He added that the state government has asked police to monitor examination centers.

“Care has been taken to maintain the sanctity of the examination. In sensitive centers, officials have been asked to keep video footage if they see any malpractice going on,” Hazarika added.

Sources in Seba said, in some districts, the authorities will restrict the entry of people, including guardians, in the examination centers. Seba has identified 66 centers in the state as sensitive and hypersensitive, Hazarika said.

What is a Hybrid Course?

A hybrid course, also known as blended learning, is a type of educational format that combines both online and in-person learning components. This model allows students to complete part of their coursework online, often involving lectures, assignments, and exams, while also attending traditional in-person classes for hands-on activities, discussions, and group projects.

Key Characteristics of Hybrid Courses

  • Online and In-person Components: The course is delivered both through online platforms (videos, readings, discussions) and in-person interactions (lectures, labs, workshops).
  • Flexible Schedule: Hybrid courses offer flexibility, allowing students to manage their time effectively and accommodate work or other commitments.
  • Technology-Driven: Uses Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas for distributing course materials, submitting assignments, and taking quizzes.
  • Self-paced Learning: The online portion of the course allows students to learn at their own pace, enabling better retention of information.
  • Interactive Engagement: Online modules often include quizzes, discussion forums, and peer-reviewed assignments, while in-person classes encourage direct interaction with instructors.

Structure of a Hybrid Course

Hybrid courses are structured to offer both synchronous (live, real-time) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning options. This dual structure enhances the flexibility of the course, catering to a wide range of learning styles and schedules.

Online Component

  • Video Lectures: Pre-recorded video lessons and tutorials accessible at any time.
  • Interactive Modules: Online activities and quizzes to reinforce understanding.
  • Discussion Forums: Virtual spaces for students to engage in discussions and ask questions.
  • Assignments & Assessments: Online submission of essays, reports, and projects, often accompanied by automated grading or peer reviews.

In-person Component

  • Lectures & Seminars: Traditional classroom sessions for deeper understanding and personal interaction with instructors.
  • Labs and Workshops: Hands-on learning opportunities, especially for technical and vocational subjects.
  • Collaborative Projects: Group activities to enhance teamwork and practical application of knowledge.
  • Exams & Evaluations: Face-to-face testing or practical assessments, depending on the course.

Benefits of Hybrid Courses

Hybrid courses offer a unique blend of advantages that make them increasingly popular among students of all ages and backgrounds.

Flexibility in Learning

  • Manageable Schedule: With online components, students can schedule their studies around work, family, and other commitments.
  • Location Independence: Students can attend classes from anywhere, as long as they have access to the internet.
  • Self-paced Learning: Online modules give students the opportunity to learn at their own pace, promoting deeper understanding.

Enhanced Learning Experience

  • Diverse Learning Materials: Students can access multimedia resources, including videos, articles, and e-books, making learning more engaging and dynamic.
  • Collaboration: The in-person components foster collaboration and networking with peers, which enhances problem-solving skills.

Challenges of Hybrid Courses

While hybrid courses offer a wealth of benefits, they also come with challenges that students must consider.

Self-discipline and Motivation

  • Time Management: The online aspect requires significant self-discipline and effective time management skills.
  • Procrastination Risk: Without the accountability of in-person classes, some students may struggle to complete assignments on time.
  • Limited Face-to-Face Interaction: While online discussions are helpful, they can sometimes lack the depth and personal connection of in-person conversations.

Technological Barriers

  • Access to Technology: Students need reliable internet and devices, which may not be available to everyone.
  • Learning Curve: Some students may find it difficult to adapt to online learning platforms and digital resources.

Instructor Availability

  • Less Immediate Access to Instructors: Unlike traditional courses where instructors are present in real-time, students may face delays in receiving answers or feedback in hybrid models.
