Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences

This College was founded by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2006. The RIMS Medical College is the dream of our former Hon`ble Chief Minister Dr.Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy. It was inaugurated on 27th September, 2006 by the then UPA Chair Person Smt. Sonia Gandhi. This Medical Institute started from 1st August, 2006. The 1st batch of undergraduates admitted entered final MBBS. The institute was constructed within a time period of 14 months in 210 acres of land with beautiful landscapes all-round.

The main objective of establishment of this institute is to improve quality health care in this backward region and make medical education accessible to all the eligible students of the region. The Government of Andhra Pradesh had taken special interest in allocation of budget to this institute, close monitoring of quality of construction and completion of project within given time frame. In a few institutions such an infrastructure is available in the state.

The first MCI inspection took place in 2005 and followed by another four inspections. The MCI inspectors were much pleased after seeing huge infrastructure equipment provided to the institute. The institute has passed through all the MCI inspections successfully without any interruption. The first batch of undergraduates successfully completed their Internship in this institution and awarded degree through Vice-Chancellor of Dr.NTRUHS in 2012. Specialists` services are very essential at tertiary level care hospitals like RIMS. The administrators are facing difficulty in recruiting specialist especially Radiodiagonis, Radiotherapy, Psychiatry and General Medicine.

In the past, RIMS General Hospital was a secondary level care Hospital i.e., District Hospital. It was located in Kadapa town. Later it was converted into tertiary level care hospital, as RIMS. During formative stages of the present RIMS, the hospital was run in the same premises later on it was shifted to the present campus. The present hospital is 8 Kms away from the Town. Due to lack of transport in the initial stages efforts have been made to run APSRTC Buses. Economically deprived groups could not pay bus charges. Hence, the hospital turnover was poor. In order to get more clinical material for the students and to bring medical aid to maximum number of people and utilize the resources to optimum level, the Government has taken steps to provide free transport from old RIMS to New RIMS. This effort patient’s attendance has reached 1200. The bed occupancy has been improved from 40% to 60% and surgical rate also improved significantly. The Institute is providing specialty services like Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology and Psychiatry tropical diseases.

College day is an important occasion for a social institute like RIMS. Every Social Institute is having a specific role and goal to fulfill. It should serve the needs of the people and satisfy the aspirations of the people. There will be always a gap between the aspirations and existing performance of the institutions. To improve quality and quantum of services, the system has to take up new policies and strategies and correcting the existing lacunae. From the time of inception to till date several developmental activities were taken up and it is an ongoing process.
