NCERT brings out learning indicators for classes I to VIII

Learning indicators for languages — English, Urdu and Hindi — have been fine-tuned to include goals a child should be able to achieve in writing, reading, listening and speaking the languages.

For the first time, the National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) has come out with an exhaustive list of learning indicators for students of classes I to VIII. The indicators aim to standardise the parameters used for measuring the learning curve of students. To start with, learning indicators have been finalised for eight subjects — English, Hindi, Urdu, Mathematics, EVS (Environmental Science), Science, Social Sciences and Art Education.

A common practice globally, this is the first time learning indicators will be used in India to assess children. Additionally, learning indicators for languages— English, Urdu and Hindi — have been fine-tuned to include goals a child should be able to achieve in writing, reading, listening and speaking the languages. For example, learning indicators in writing for a Class I student assess not just the student’s ability to form complete words and letters, but also his/her ability to use proper spacing between words, write names of animals etc.

In Class II, a student should be able to write rhyming words and contribute for the school magazine. The levels have been gradually increased so that by Class VIII, a student can not only read and write, but also use his or her faculty to read between the lines, understand new concepts, and explore and read other areas of knowledge.

Similarly, the EVS curriculum aims to teach students not just environmental issues, but also the relationship between the natural and social environment, the diversity in our surroundings and curiosity about the environment. “The indicators will help teachers understand the learning levels of children individually as well as collectively. In the absence of such indicators…,” an NCERT document states.
